Colors and Frequency
Do we need to memorize which colors corresponds with which frequency/wavelength/energy of photons? For example, if given a wavelength in nm, do we need to automatically know which color it corresponds to?

I think it will be very helpful to understand the concept, hence it would facilitate working out problems, but to have it memorized would be a stretch. To make sure I would ask the TA

Its probably a good idea to just memorize the minimum and max frequency of the visible spectrum. But Dr. Lavelle insists he isnt going to make anybody memorize details such as that.

It would help to have a general sense of how wavelength corresponds to the type of EM radiation, just because it would be easier to understand the real world implications of the practice problems. It would help you to know whether we're dealing with visible light or x-rays etc., but I'm not sure if it is required to memorize the exact numbers.

I believe we had to remember just a general range and not the actual frequencies of each color. Knowing the frequencies of violet, green and red are probably the most that will be needed and everything else will most likely be given.

Ya just knowing the general wavelength range for certain electromagnetic radiation like visible light or x-rays should be enough.

I think it would just be helpful to be able to know kind of generally where different wavelengths fall within the spectrum and then know the order in which they fall, like knowing which types of light are bigger and smaller than what other types based on their wavelength

Knowing the general range of the visible spectrum is a good idea. But we will not need to identify colors by their wavelengths, as most questions on the topic give both pieces of information.

I think it's good to have a general knowledge of where each colors are and their corresponding wavelengths and frequencies. From how I remember it, from decreasing wavelength, the order goes Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Violet. This corresponds to increasing frequencies. I use the acronym ROYGBV in order to remember the order easier. In terms of numbers, for wavelengths it ranges from around 700nm (Red) to 400nm (Violet). For frequencies, it ranges from around 500 Hz (Red) to 750 Hz (Violet).

I think it might be a good idea to have knowledge, but it might not be necessary to memorize.

I think I heard someone ask this question in lecture and he said that he doesn't expect us to memorize it now, but it sounded like we may need to be more familiar with it later.

I am wondering the same thing. Certain homework questions imply that we should memorize them, and they're not included in the constant worksheet on Dr. Lavelle's webpage

We just need to know the general wavelengths that are associated with types of waves.

I believe that is would be helpful to know the two opposing ends of the spectrum, with red and blue light, and where they fall into the entire Electromagnetic spectrum.
