### Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy versus Atomic Emission Spectroscopy

Hi, I need help with the following question on the module:

13. In the above experiment if only the absorbed wavelengths of light are detected what is the experiment called? What is the spectrum called?

I know this is a question about the definition but why is it not:

A. Atomic absorption spectroscopy; Emission line spectrum?

Since you are detecting the light that is absorbed by the substance, the spectrum would be an absorption spectrum as you are seeing which wavelengths of light are being absorbed (hence the name absorption spectroscopy). If you were detecting the light emitted by a substance, then it would be the emission spectrum.

The atomic absorption spectroscopy part is correct. Yet, the emission line spectrum would be the answer to an experiment where only emitted wavelengths of light are detected.

Since the experiment is detecting absorbed light not emitted light, its just called absorption line spectrum. It shows what wavelengths are absorbed not which ones are emitted.
