What is the significance of the principle quantum number?
I know it is represented by "n" but I don't know what it means exactly

The Principal Quantum numbers signify the orbital in which the electron is in and thus the energy level of the electron.

To add on, "n" determines the energy and the size of the orbital. It is represented by integers like 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. "n" is important because it can help you determine possible values of l and m(l) because those quantum numbers are dependent on the value of "n".

The principle quantum number n is used to distinguish atomic orbitals that have similar energies that we consider to be in the same shell. The principle quantum # can be used to find other quantum numbers such as l=n-1.

Re: Principle Quantum #
n is the energy level. It describes the type of orbital the electron will be located in. If n=1, then it is at the ground state/first energy level where energy is the lowest. The higher the n, the more energy there are at those energy levels.
