### Chapter 1 number 33

Why in question number 33 do we add 1/2 MV^2 to the amount of energy found in part B?

The energy of the photon is equal to the energy required to remove an electron from the metal PLUS the kinetic energy of the removed electron. Since the electron removed in the problem has that given kinetic energy, you have to take into account both the kinetic energy of the electron AND the work function (energy required to remove electron from metal) in order to find the right wavelength.

Adding on, the formula for the photoelectric effect is: Ephoton=Threshold Level+Kinetic Energy of the electron.
