Quantum Numbers n, l, and m

Postby Shuyi Yu 1B » Thu Oct 25, 2018 7:22 pm

Can the relationship between n, l, and m be described as shell, sub-shell, and orbital within a sub-shell, respectively? And does the value of l tell you the highest possible sub-shell of that particular energy level?

n = principle energy level (shell), l is angular momentum (subshell), and ml = magnetic quantum (orbital).
The highest value of l is equal n-1
Values of l correspond to subshells: 0-s, 1-p, 2-d, 3-f

Yes, that's how they could be described! and the highest possible subshell of a particular shell would be n-1!

Hope this helped!

and the fourth quantum number, ms, is either +1/2 or -1/2, and determines whether the electron is spin up or spin down

How do you know if the spin is up or down?

Spin up is +1/2 and spin down is -1/2.
