Degeneracy

What is the difference in degeneracy for an H-atom and multielectron atoms? Do the same rules apply?

All of the orbitals in the shell of a hydrogen atom are degenerate. Orbitals with the same n but different values of l is true only for the hydrogen atom and one-electron ions.

For multi-electron, orbitals with same l but different ml are said to be degenerate. For hydrogen, orbitals with different n are degenerate because it only has one electron. This rule would not apply to multi-electron model because multi-electron model is more complicated and need to take the electrostatic interaction into account.

I do not understand the importance of degeneracy.

Just to clarify, is the degeneracy related to the orbital in an atom?
