1D.9 nodes

Postby keyaluo4C » Sun Oct 28, 2018 6:16 pm

1D.9 asks for the number of radial nodes and angular nodal surfaces. What is the difference between these two and aren't they the same number?

Angular nodes are planar areas where there is 0 probability of finding electrons, kind of like a flat sheet. Radial nodes are spherical shells where there is 0 probability of finding electrons, like a peel.
The second quantum number ℓ gives the number of angular nodes. The number of radial nodes is given by n - ℓ - 1.

Much Joy,
