Lewis Structures- formal charge
How can you find the formal charges on each atom in a Lewis structure?

You use the equation FC= V-(L+S/2), where FC is the formal charge, V is the number of valence electrons, L is the number of lone pairs, and S is the number of shared electrons.

This is the equation to find the formal charge.
Valance electrons - (lone pair electrons + number of bonds) = Formal charge.
Valance electrons - (lone pair electrons + number of bonds) = Formal charge.

I like using this equation more than the FC = V - (L + S/2) one because there is less room for error!

Re: Lewis Structures- formal charge
In order to calculate formal charge, use this equation:
FC= V - (L+ (S/2)), where V is the number of valence electrons, L is the number of electrons in lone pairs, and S is the number of shared electrons.
Hope this helps! :)
