When do you put lines and when do you put dots when drawing Lewis structures?

Lines are for bonded electrons (electrons being shared between atoms) while dots are for lone pair electrons in which the valence electrons are not being shared with another atom.

Lines represent shared or bonded electrons, while dots are used when an electron is unbonded: a "lone pair"
