resonance hybrids
What does the resonance hybrid exactly show? Does it show the attraction of electrons within the molecule through the dotted lines? Thank you!

The resonance hybrid shows the delocalized electrons in a molecule and it is a representation of the sum of all the resonance structures.

You can write a Lewis structure with dotted lines between the atoms to show resonance, but I think it'd be safer to write out each resonance structure and have the double arrows in between each to show resonance since that's what Dr. Lavelle did in class.

Resonance hybrids basically represent the multiple Lewis structures with a double headed arrow combined into a single Lewis structure. A molecule's resonance hybrid is an average of all the possible resonance structures it can form. The dotted lines represent a possible bond that could be formed in any of the several possible resonance structures of a molecule. In a resonance structure, electrons are delocalized and therefore, each bond in the structure is a partial bond where the delocalized electrons are spread evenly among the bonds, which is what the dotted lines essentially show.

This is for clarification: we can never fully know the structure of a resonance hybrid, correct? It has average bond lengths, but with the electrons being delocalized, there's no way to know. Am I missing something?
