degeneracy of the a 4p orbital

Postby 505166714 » Fri Nov 02, 2018 10:32 pm

for question 5.c on test2:
how exactly should I answer: what is the degeneracy of a 4p orbital?

the degeneracy of a 4p orbital would be 3

The degeneracy would be 3 because there are 3 possible orientations for electrons in the p orbital.

I may be definitely wrong but I thought that degeneracy meant same energy level, do it would be 4s?

The degeneracy of a 4p orbital will be 3 because they all have the same energy level.

So we are not taking into account the spin of the electrons? I thought that the energy of an electron did not change if the electron had spin up or down. So for a 4p orbital, would we not have: n=4, l=1, m_l=1,0,-1 and m_s = +1/2,-1/2; a total degeneracy of 6?

All three p orbitals in a given shell are degenerate because they all have the same energy level.

Since it’s 4p, we know p has 1 subshell (l=1), that subshell has 3 orbitals and all those orbitals will have the same energy level

The answer would be 3 because p has one subshell, which will have 3 orbitals which all share the same energy level.

This would be the total number of electrons but degeneracy applies to orbitals with the same energy level not the number of electrons
