Electronegativity Difference

Postby Tamera Scott 1G » Fri Nov 02, 2018 4:23 pm

What happens when the electronegativity difference is between 1.5 and 2?

I believe Lavelle said that we would be unable to make a definitive answer if it lies in between. We would need more information/experimentation to be able to tell which type of bond it is

You would have to use information about other properties of the compound to determine whether it is a covalent bond or an ionic bond, such as solubility in water.

there is no way to tell just by the calculations if its between the two numbers you would have to look at other characteristics in order to find out

Lavelle also mentioned that we would not be asked a question that resulted in a value like 1.6. He will make it more clear whether it is >2 (ionic) or <1.5 (covalent).

What Dr. Lavelle said about the >2 and <1.5 is just a rough guideline. For electronegativity differences between 1.5 and 2, you would need more information to determine whether it's an ionic or covalent bond.

i dont think we'll have to worry about small differences like those since we wont be given exact numbers. he said he would only give problems if they're really obviously ionic or covalent.
