Homework Problem 3.19

Give the ground-state electron configuration and number of unpaired electrons expected for each of the following ions:
(a) Sb3
(b) Sn4
How do you find the number of unpaired electrons?

We use the electron configuration. We would adjust this due to the charge. Then we draw the spins of the electrons.

Using the valence electrons, fill out the outermost shell by following Hund's Rule, which says to fill in 1 electron in each orbital first and then start pairing them once each orbital 1 electron. Then you can see how many electrons remain unpaired.
