degeneracy in quantum numbers

Postby davidryan3f » Sun Nov 04, 2018 3:19 pm

Could someone explain what exactly degeneracy is in quantum numbers?

Degeneracy means that the first two quantum numbers are the same and that the orbitals are equivalent.

e.g. 2px, 2py, 2pz

Degenerate orbitals mean that the electrons within the orbital contain the same energy level.

So the s block has one degeneracy, the p block has 3, the d block has 5 and the f block has 10
