Relation between strong acid and weak bond
When comparing bond strengths in lecture, Dr. Lavelle said that HI would be the strongest acid in comparison to HF, HCl, and HBr. Can someone explain why having the weakest bond means it will be a strong acid?

Re: Relation between strong acid and weak bond
Lewis acids accept electrons, so a weaker bond means that it is easier for that hydrogen bond to be broken. Iodine is larger than the other atoms and therefore the bond between it and hydrogen is weaker, making it a stronger electron acceptor, or a stronger acid.
Re: Relation between strong acid and weak bond
I believe you already know, but keep in mind a single bond the weakest bond, and a triple bond is strongest. I think HI is a stronger acid because the bond is weak which means it can be broken easily. Also, acids want to take in more electrons and considering the single bond is a weaker bond it will be easily done.

Re: Relation between strong acid and weak bond
A weak bond would be a strong acid because an acid is an electron acceptor meaning that it has fewer electrons and therefore the bond is weaker.
