Re: VSEPR?
It stands for Valence Electron Shell Pairs Reel--this name conceptualizes how to draw the 3D model of molecules. It denotes that you want to draw the model in a way that will minimize electron repulsion.
Hope this helps!

Re: VSEPR?
Lewis structure only considered valence electrons, while VSEPR also takes minimization of electron repulsion into account.

Re: VSEPR?
Also, an important distinction to make is that lewis structures can determine shape but within the context of a 2-D model. VSEPR effectively works for 3-D context, which is the correct model.

Re: VSEPR?
VSEPR stands for valence shell electron pair repulsion. Electrons are negatively charged, so they do not want to be near each other. The Lewis structure and AXE notation of a molecule can determine its best molecular shape.
For example, AX3 is trigonal planar. The bond angle is 120 degrees.

Re: VSEPR?
How would you apply VSEPR to determine the shape of various types of molecules? I know what the acronym stands for, but am unsure how to apply it.

Re: VSEPR?
VSEPR essentially uses the ideas from the Lewis dot structure to model the geometry of molecules using electron pairs that are around the central in order to minimize the repulsion found in between the valence electrons of that specific molecule.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe its the opposite way around. Lewis dot structures are important for drawing/understanding VSEPR. Lewis dot structures lead us to find the structure of these components.
