Molecular Shape

Postby Peter Nguyen 2I » Sun Nov 11, 2018 10:27 am

Is a molecule's shape solely dependent on the number of atoms involved? Do the type of atoms affect it?

The types of atoms do not affect it, rather the number of atoms and electrons. Indirectly the type of atom affects shape by determining the number of electrons available.

In a molecule, you should pay attention to the number of electron bonding pairs and the number of lone electron pairs, generally around the central atom. This will help you determine, according to electron repulsion, how the shape of a molecule should be and why it is that way.

The type of atom does not affect the shape, the number of atoms do. Remember that the shape has to be a 3D shape not 2D because we live in a 3D world. Hope this helps :)

The only way in which the type of atom would affect the shape is in determining the number of electrons present and which atom is the central atom in the structure.
