Polarizable vs Polarizing Ability
What is the difference between these two terms, and what they have to do with electronegativity?

Re: Polarizable vs Polarizing Ability
Polarizability is the ease of the distortion of the electron cloud of the atom or molecule.
Polarizing ability is how easily an atom or molecule can distort the electron cloud of another atom or molecule.

Re: Polarizable vs Polarizing Ability
In general, large anions are highly polarizable because the nucleus' pull on the outermost electrons is smaller due to the size of the anion, so the electron cloud is easily distorted. You can think of it as the electrons not being held very tightly by the nucleus, causing them to be pulled in different directions more easily.
On the other hand, small and highly charged cations have high polarizing power, because the center of the charge can get very close to an anion (due to the cation's small radius) and exert a strong pull on the anion's electrons.
