Class Grading
Will this class be graded on a curve like most STEM courses? I searched through the sylabus and didn't see anything about the grading scale, so I wanted to ask.

Re: Class Grading
I think the class isn't curved because, on the syllabus, there is a 500 point total grade already calculated out. Plus, I remember hearing people say that the class might not be curved. I'm not 100% sure but I hope this helps!

Re: Class Grading
Actually, I read some of the older post from Lavelle about curving. He said in that post "curves vary from quarter to quarter" and students can expect a 3-5% curve from the standard point scale. I hope he still continues this grade curving.

Re: Class Grading
Does anyone know the range of an A in the class, a B, and C. In terms of points or percentage. I am a little confused because on the syllabus it says a passing grade C- is a 50%... ??

Re: Class Grading
No, this class is not graded on a curve. On the syllabus it lists and overall point system. Basically, I think the homework points and chemistry community points act as a kind of curve like or buffer to your grade. Honestly, the curve would probably hurt more than help.

Re: Class Grading
This is what the syllabus says about grading: "Each test and exam has a total score but is not assigned a grade. Only at the end of the class when
the class average score (out of 500 points) is known are final grades assigned. This class does not use a curve. Group learning (Chemistry Community, Study Groups, Peer Learning, etc.) is encouraged. 50% or higher is required to pass with a C- or higher." Hope that helps!

Re: Class Grading
don't think so but i think he has the right to change the curve at the end of the semester
Re: Class Grading
On the syllabus it says the class takes the average of the total points out of 500 that students get in the class. Then it gives grades to students accordingly.
Re: Class Grading
The syllabus says that the class is not curved, however, from past experience if a class is based on a straight scale (A+ 97% A 93-96% A- 90-92 % and so on) and the average is lower than a B the class will be curved in our favor. But I am not too sure if this applies to Chem14a.
