Lewis Structures before Forces?

Postby Isabel Nakoud 4D » Tue Nov 13, 2018 10:35 pm

How have you guys been approaching the Homework Problems on Intermolecular forces?

Should we always draw out the lewis structure and/or geometric shape of molecules before determining the possible/expected intermolecular forces? (otherwise, how will we predict the unique cases where the dipoles cancel each other out?)

I think until you can intuitively figure it out, it's best to draw the Lewis structures. For me, unless I'm 100% sure of its structure (like CH4), I will draw the full Lewis structure.

Drawing the Lewis structure is your best guide. Once you draw it out, use your knowledge about polarizability and electronegativity to determine the distribution of charge and the type of intermolecular force.
