Which elements can have expanded octets and why?

Common elements that can have an expanded octet are sulfur, phosphorous, silicon and chlorine. They can have more than an octet because they have d- orbitals that can hold electrons. These d-orbitals have higher energy than 4s- orbitals so those electrons are used for bonding.

Here is a helpful link that has more detail: https://courses.lumenlearning.com/bound ... ctet-rule/

Any element on or below period 3 of the periodic table can have an expanded octet because these elements have d orbitals that can hold more electrons.

Any element that has or can have a d orbital (aka period 3 and beyond)

Elements that would be considered to have an expanded octet are those in period 3 and beyond because these specific elements can/are able to hold electrons in the d-orbital shell.

Elements that have a d orbital can have expanded octets. However, a few elements on the right side of period 3 can expand with the extra electrons. S and Cl are common examples of central atoms with more than 8 electrons.

Elements in and after period three because of the d-orbital.

Any element in period 3 or below can have expanded octets as they can expand into the d-orbitals.

Elements that contain a d-orbital can have expanded octets.
