Describing Hybridization
If a molecule has more than four regions of electron density, how would one describe the hybridization of the orbitals (in other words if the electrons of the molecule occupy more than four orbitals) ?

If there are 5 regions of electron density, hybridization is sp3d. If there are 6 regions of electron density, hybridization is sp3d2.

There's a chart in 4.2 that has the electron arrangement, number of atomic orbitals, hybridization of the central atom, and the number of hybrid orbitals. It can be helpful since it gives a breakdown.

For a molecule with 4 regions of electron density, you would write the hybridization as sp3. After that, it would be 5=sp3d, 6=sp3d2, etc. Each region can be counted off using one letter.
