Amount of sigma bonds
In a bond between 2 atoms, can there only be one sigma bond? Are there any exceptions?

Re: Amount of sigma bonds
There can only be one sigma bond between two atoms and if theres another bond, its a pi bond. There can be up to two pi bonds and one sigma bond between two atoms in a molecule.

Re: Amount of sigma bonds
a single bond is representative of one sigma bond; a double bond is representative of a sigma bond and a pi bond; a triple bond is representative of one sigma and two pi bonds.

Re: Amount of sigma bonds
Single bond = one sigma bond, double bond = one sigma bond and one pi bond, and triple = one sigma bond and two pi bonds

Re: Amount of sigma bonds
The other 2nd bond would have to be a pi bond since there can only be one sigma bond.

Re: Amount of sigma bonds
There is only one sigma bond because every bond thereafter is a pi bond. Pi bonds form when non-hybridized orbitals bond with one another.
