Because double bonds include a pi bond that prevents rotation, they are more stable.

Double bonds are more stable than single bonds. This is because double bonds also have a π (Pi) bond, while single bonds only have σ (sigma) bonds. Pi bonds prevent rotation thus making double bonds more stable.

I understand that double bonds are more stable because of the fact that they have both sigma and pi bonds. Can another reason be that because double bonds have shorter distances than single bonds, thus making the doubles bonds stronger and more stable?

Double bonds are stronger than single bonds because double bonds add stability to compounds and restrict rotation around the bond axis. Double bonds have sigma bonds and pi bonds; double bonds are also shorter than single bonds because the extra bonding electrons pull atoms closer together.
