Complete Lewis Structures

Postby taline_n » Wed Nov 21, 2018 11:17 am

How can we tell when we're supposed to draw regular Lewis structures vs. the separated Lewis structures with charges? For questions 2B.9 and 2B.11 in the textbook (7th edition), the question is the same ("Draw the complete Lewis structure for each of the following compounds") yet the answers are two completely different types of structures. Will we need to be able to do both kinds on the test?

I think either is fine, but I've noticed the separate structure seems more common for ionic compounds like salts.

For drawing them either structure should be fine, but you should be able to know the name of the structure that is made from either of the drawings.

Either is fine but you should know how to identify both of them.
