Canceling?

Postby 305174946 » Thu Nov 22, 2018 10:28 pm

When dipole moments cancel that means that the molecule is nonpolar correct? Also, since dipole moments have the same magnitude (right?) the only way to cancel them is by direction, right? Is there any other way for them to cancel?

Correct, when all of the individual dipole vectors of a molecule cancel out, then the overall molecule is nonpolar.

correct, when they are by magnitude and as you and the previous comment said when they cancel they become non-polar.

yes, the dipole vectors can cancel eachother which causes the molecule to be nonpolar.
