London forces and dipole moments

Postby Samantha Chung 4I » Wed Nov 21, 2018 1:52 pm

When instantaneous dipole dipole moments are produced at a greater rate, can we correctly say that the London forces increase in strength?

I'm not sure what you mean by greater rate of dipole dipole moment, but from what I understand, London forces increase when size or mass of atoms increase.

Temporary dipole dipole moments happen more frequently when the size of the molecule increases. If a given amount of substance experiences more of these dipole dipole moments that would mean that the london forces are stronger in that molecule.

London forces are the weakest of all intermolecular forces, and they increase in strength as the total number of electrons increase.

Bigger molecules and more polarizable molecules both have stronger of London forces. A bigger molecule has more electrons and therefore a higher chance of causing an instantaneous dipole moment (like you asked), so with more of these moments, the force exuded will be stronger.
