Arrows showing charge

Postby Samantha Hoegl Roy 2C » Sat Nov 24, 2018 1:25 pm

In Dr. lavelles class, do we draw the arrows towards the negative charge of a molecule or towards the negative charge? The book says both way exists, so I just want to make sure I use the correct one.

I believe that in discussion, we drew the arrows toward the net negative charge on the molecule, therefore where the stronger electronegativity is pulling the electrons, the arrow would point.

The arrows point towards the element that has the slightly negative charge, or where the electrons have a higher density.
For example, in HCl, H is slightly positive while Cl is slightly negative, so the arrow points towards Cl.

The arrows should point in the direction of the atom with higher electronegativity, indicating an area with higher electron density

Some arrows have a plus sign, +, on the tail showing positive and then point of arrow is going to negative
