Bond Strengths

Postby Douglas Nguyen 2J » Sun Nov 25, 2018 12:55 pm

"On a plot of the potential energy of a diatomic molecule as a function of the internuclear distance, the dissociation energy is the distance between the bottom of the energy well and the energy of the separated atoms" (93, 6th E.).

Would someone be able to explain this to me in layman terms?

What it's basically saying is that the diatomic molecule has a certain amount of energy at a particular distance needed to break the molecule apart. All molecules have this optimal distance between each other that is really stable. At this optimal distance, the potential energy is at its lowest due to its stability.
