Sigma bonds are made up of two orbitals in which 1 electron from each atom interact end to end. This is an s-s orbital overlap and allows for rotation. A pi bond is made up of a side by side overlap of orbitals and prevents rotation.

A sigma bond is the very first bond between two atoms, while pi bonds are the ones that come after the sigma bond. For example in a triple bond, there is one sigma bond and two pi bonds.

Also, sigma bonds are generally more stable than pi bonds due to the fact that there is greater orbital overlap in sigma bonds

Sigma bonds are also stronger than pi bonds, so a double bond (sigma + pi) would overall still be weaker than 2 sigma bonds.

Think of sigma bonds being the inital bond between two molecules and every additional bond being a pi bond.

A sigma bond is the strongest type of covalent chemical bond. A pi bond contains p-p orbitals and it is a covalent bond formed by the side to side overlap of orbitals, which can be easily broken. Also, a single bond consists of a sigma bond, and let's say you have a double bond, this consists of a sigma bond and a pi bond.

Sigma's bond along the same orientation axis. Pie bonds don't, so there is no rotation. Pie bonds are weaker than Sigma bonds because they don't have overlap, so weaker attraction
