Will we need to know how to draw the hybridized orbitals for the test?

Yes, Test 3 includes bonding trends, shapes, molecular shape, polarity, and hybridization.

I think Dr. Lavelle said we do not need to know how to draw the shapes of the hybridized orbitals, but we do need to be able to identify the ones used.

I think we don't have to know how to draw the 3-D hydbridization diagrams, but that we have to know how to make the electron configuration and understand how it works.

For test 3, we need to know 3.12 and onwards in chapter 3 and all of chapter 4. Professor Lavelle said that as long as we know how to identify the molecular shape and the general angles, we're good. We need to draw Lewis structures, but I don't think you need to know how to draw hybridizations.

So does identifying molecular shape include knowing how to identify electron density shape as well?

I think that as long as we are able to understand how the hybridization works and know that the VSEPR model only accounts for bonded atoms then we should be okay for that part.

We should probably be able to identify the shape and hybridization of a molecule, based on the ones Dr. Lavelle provided in class.

"Test 3 covers: End of Bonding from 3.12 (6 Ed.) and from 2D (7 Ed.); and all of Molecular Shape and Structure (see Syllabus and Outlines for details)."

When it says "3.12 and onward", what topics does that include? I'm assuming hybridization and things of that nature?

Ionic vs. covalent bonds, the strengths, and then chapter 6. I would just look at the textbook to see what will be on the test.
