What is the coordination number and how do you find it?

I am not sure how to find the coordination number, however the coordination number is defined as the number of atoms or ions immediately surrounding a central atom in a complex.

The coordination number of transition metals can be calculated by knowing the overall charges of the compound and the individual charges of non-metals in the compound. The charges of all atoms within the compound should add up to the overall charge of the compound.

The coordination number is the number of ligands bonded to the central atoms. It seems that the coordination number can be found by just tallying the number of other atoms or other, smaller molecules within the complex's formula ( ex. coordination number 4 for [CoCl4]^(2-) or 2 for [HgCl2] ).

Usual geometric configurations for coordination numbers
* Coordination Number 2 - linear
* Coordination Number 3 - trigonal planar, trigonal pyramid, T-shaped
* Coordination Number 4 - tetrahedral, square planar
* Coordination Number 5 - trigonal bipyramidal
* Coordination Number 6 - trigonal prism, octahedral

the coordination number is the number of atoms/ions that surround the central atom and you find it by calculating the charge

I remember the coordination number as the number of bonds to the central atom.

The coordination number is how many atoms/ligand are bonded to the central compound.

So coordination number corresponds to the areas bonded to the center of a ligand similar to the electron geometry structures?

Coordination number is basically the number of bonded atoms to the central atom.

Earlier today someone some one told me that the coordination number was the number of DIFFERENT bonds which threw me off. But what I'm seeing here is that when we have 3 of the SAME atoms bound to a central atom, the coordination # is still 3, right?
