The difference between strong and weak acids/bases is dependent on their dissociation of either hydrogen or hydroxide ions, respectively. Strong acids typically have anions with a high degree of electronegativity, allowing for their hydrogen ions to be loosely bound and prone to disassociate. Strong bases conversely have cations with a low degree of electronegativity, allowing for their hydroxide ions to more freely disassociate.
