Cis and Trans
In lecture today, we talked about the difference between cis and trans molecules. I understand the difference, but is it better for a molecule to be cis or trans?

Re: Cis and Trans
Being cis or trans is really dependent on the biological function of the molecule. Having a cis configuration is convenient for the cisplatin chemotherapy drug mentioned in class, but for a different compound with a trans configuration, it may prove to be more effective for its function.

Re: Cis and Trans
If a polar bond is needed between molecules, then a cis molecule is preferred (it's polar). If the desire is to prevent polar bonds from forming, then a trans molecule is preferred (it's non-polar).

Re: Cis and Trans
There are pros and cons to each shape, so it is really just dependent on what the intended purpose is of the molecule.

Re: Cis and Trans
The cis or trans property of the molecule depends on its polarity. This means cis or trans is more beneficial to a molecule depending on its function.

Re: Cis and Trans
The cis configuration is polar which means it can create dipole dipole interactions and create a stronger bond compared to the trans configuration

Re: Cis and Trans
There's no definite answer to which is better. The preferred version depends on the purpose of the molecule. The situation at hand will determine the more desired form between the two.

Re: Cis and Trans
It depends on what the molecule is being used for, because cis will usually be polar and trans will usually be nonpolar.

Re: Cis and Trans
yea it depends on which is more beneficial in terms of polarity. If you want to have a nonpolar molecule with a zero dipole moment then do trans but if you want a polar molecule with a nonzero dipole moment, then cis.
