Water molecules

Postby Nicoline Breytenbach 3D » Sat Dec 01, 2018 6:41 pm

Do water molecules form only one hydrogen bond with another water molecule? Or does it use both its hydrogens, forming two separate hydrogen bonds with two other water molecules?

It uses both hydrogens to create hydrogen bonds with the oxygens of other water molecules.

The hydrogens in water are partial positive, so they will form hydrogen bonds with any of the NOF atoms charged partial negative.

They bond with things that have a partial negative charge as they have a partial positive charge. They will form hydrogen bonds with N, O, and F (if they have partial negative charges, which they should). H bonding holds DNA together and gives whatever it makes up higher melting and boiling points.

Water molecules use both Hydrogen atoms to form a hydrogen bond and not both to form one bond.

both hydrogens are used to form hydrogen bonds

It uses both of its hydrogens to form hydrogen bonds with other water molecules but keep in mind that these are not actual bonds. They are interactions between the oxygen atom and the hydrogen atom.

Water molecules use both hydrogens for hydrogen bonding.

But always remember, hydrogen bonding is always with the elements F, O, and N

F, O, and N always have to have a lone pair for there to be any hydrogen bonding

Water molecules use both Hydrogen atoms to form a hydrogen bond.
