Determining Oxidation numbers

Postby Mara Lockhart 3J » Fri Feb 06, 2015 3:21 pm

For problem 13.1, part a asks us to identify the elements undergoing changes in oxidation state and indicate the initial and final oxidation numbers for these elements. I am not sure how to to find the initial and final (the solutions manual got C was oxidized from 2- to 1-). How do we identify these numbers?

Fundamentals Section K of the textbook (pages F78-F81) explains how to assign oxidation numbers with some examples. I have attached a picture of the rules for assigning oxidation numbers.

At the beginning of my video here I explain how to assign oxidation numbers!

Also, this is more clear than the textbook—it's from my old IB Chem HL textbook. (Hope this isn't illegal to post.)
