what does degeneracy mean and how do we determine it for orbitals?
Also when do we use orbital, shell, and subshell, I find myself using these words interchangeably.

Degeneracy basically means of which orbital.bThe degeneracy of s=1, p=3, d=5, f=7
Think of it this way: Shell is n, subshell is l (in those subshells are "orbitals")

Re: Degeneracy
All electrons that have the same value for n are in the same shell.
Within a shell (same n), all electrons that share the same l (the angular momentum quantum number, or orbital shape) are in the same sub-shell
When electrons share the same n, l, and ml, we say they are in the same orbital (they have the same energy level, shape, and orientation).
I think essentially degeneracy means the number or orbitals, or ml (s has 1; p has 3; d has 5; f has 7) because that's what I put on my test and it was correct.

Re: Degeneracy
Degeneracy corresponds with the orbitals, therefore; they go as follows, s=1, p=3, d=5, f=7.

Re: Degeneracy
Degeneration refers to all the orbitals having the same energy. For example, the three orbitals in 3p are considered degenerate because they have the same energy. Hope this helps.

Re: Degeneracy
Degenerate orbitals are orbitals with the same energy. This degeneracy can sometimes be "lifted" by external electric or magnetic fields.
