Hybridization Notation

Postby Ryan Danis 1J » Thu Nov 29, 2018 11:26 pm

If there is a molecule with let’s say dsp3 hybridization does it matter if we put the d first? Or can we say sp3d?

Either notation is correct.

I believe Lavelle prefers the d to be at the end.

Either way works but in a previous post i believe sp3d is preferred.

Both are correct. However, Lavelle has a personal preference for sp3d because it looks more uniform when listed with other hybridizations (sp, sp2, sp3, sp3d2)

The examples in class had sp3d.

Either notation is acceptable but Dr. Lavelle mentioned that he prefers the d orbital to placed at the end.

On a test will both notations be counted as correct?

Both notations are correct but Lavelle prefers to have it placed at the end like sp3d.
