Ionization in Water

Postby 905085650 » Sun Dec 02, 2018 6:14 pm

What is the relationship between strong and weak bases and getting partially or fully ionized in water?

Thank you!!

Strong bases fully dissociate in water, while weak bases only partially dissociate, as the strength of the base depends on its ability to fully dissociate.

Is this why the balanced equation for strong acids have a one-way arrow while weak acids have a two-way arrow?

Yep! That's exactly why

Technically, even strong bases are at an equilibrium where those bonds may randomly form and break, which is signified by the two way arrow. We would use a one way arrow to simplify it because we know that the equilibrium will be so heavily in favor of one side that it is only happening in one direction if we look at the net concentrations of each.

A strong acid fully disassociates in a solution while a weak acid partially disassociates in a solution.

Strong bases are completely ionized in water while weak bases are partially/incompletely ionized in water.

When in contact with water, strong acids and bases are able to fully dissociate due to their high Ka and Kb values. However weak acids and weak bases have lower Ka and Kb values so they are not able to completely ionize in water.

The weak acids partially dissociate and the stronger ones fully disassociate.
