what is a ligand?

Postby Jackie Ngo 1C » Sun Dec 02, 2018 11:50 pm

sorry this is a really dumb question, but is a ligand basically an atom that is attached to a central atom? what is it about ligands that makes them so important in this chapter?

A ligand is a molecule that can bind to another molecule. The ligand donates since it is an acid donor.

A ligand can be an ion or a molecule that is a Lewis base (electron donor) that binds to the central atom or ion in the d-metal complex. They are important because they help make coordination compounds.

Just for clarification, a ligand must be able to donate electrons in order to form a coordinate covalent bond with the central atom, correct?

A ligand is an ion or molecule attached to a metal atom by coordinate bonding.

Ligands are just molecules bonded to the central atom that help make up regions of electron density. Ligands always follow the octet rule, except hydrogen which can have 2 electrons in its valence shell. Hope that helps.
