Amphoteric clarification

Postby Cienna Henry 1J » Wed Dec 05, 2018 9:53 am

An amphoteric compound can only act as an acid or a base at once, correct? It can't act as both at the same time right?

Yes, that is correct.

Yes. One amphoteric molecule could be H20 but that still can't act both as a base or acid. It depends whether the other molecule reacting with water is more basic or acidic.

Yes, it is highly unlikely for an amphoteric molecule to act as both an acid and a base at one time because it would require the simultaneous donation and acceptance of a hydrogen ion by that molecule.

Yes. It depends on the reaction you have.

Any molecule that is amphoteric is also amphiprotic
