Total Charge

Postby Reese - Dis 1G » Wed Dec 05, 2018 11:15 pm

How can you find the total charge of a complex if you are given the oxidation state?

If you have the oxidation state of the transition metal, then you can look at the charges of the ligands and add them together. If the oxidation state of the TM is +3, but the total charge of the ligands is -2, then the total charge of the coordination compound is +1.

You have to add up the charge of the transition metal and the charges of all the ligands attached to the transition metal

Add up the charges of the ligands and the transition metal.

just add up all of the charges of the transition metal and ligands

In order to find this total charge, you would have to sum the charges of the transition metal and the ligands.
