Bent Structures

Postby Kate_Santoso_4F » Wed Dec 05, 2018 9:04 pm

Would it be appropriate to say that all bent or angular moleculars are polar? Because even if the atoms are the same (such as in ozone, O3), the molecule is still polar, or is ozone just a special case?

I believe all bent molecules are polar due asymmetry caused by the lone pair(s) located on the central atom.

I believe it will be appropriate to say so if electronegative difference exists, resulting in polarity.

I believe it is appropriate to saw all bent structures are polar due to their shape. There will always be a net electronegativity pointing in one direction since they cannot cancel each other due to the bond angle.

Yes because all bent molecules are polar.

Due to the shape, they are polar.

How do we know the bond angles of bent structures?

It's hard to specifically calculate bond angles but just know that bent structures that have more lone pairs will have a smaller angle.

Yes they are all polar because they have lone pairs that won't cancel out.
