Why can iron in myoglobin form 6 bonds?

Since iron is past row two, it can have an expanded octet, so it's able to accommodate the extra electrons. Additionally, as a transition metal, iron is capable of taking on a couple different charges while still remaining stable.

Iron can form six bonds because it is one of the atoms that can form an expanded octet. Iron can have an expanded octet because electrons can go into the d-orbital found in the third principal energy level.
