Transition metals have many oxidation states because they have the d shell where they can lose electrons from.

to go further from the previous reply, the transitions metals belong in the d-block, meaning they are able to have more oxidation states than elements that do not. At this point, the electron shells do not have a lot of difference in energy like there was between the s and 2p orbitals.

Transition metals are capable of adopting ions with different charges because in mind they are in the d-block so they one or more unpaired electrons in one of their ions.

Transition metals are in the d block so they have electrons they can adopt electrons with more than one charge
