Strong acids and bases to memorize

Postby Emmaraf 1K » Wed Dec 05, 2018 6:41 pm

Since conjugate bases of weak acids form basic solutions and conjugate acids of weak bases form acidic solutions does anyone have just a clean list of strong acids and bases to memorize where we just can assume if the acid/base isn't on the list then it's weak? I believe for strong bases it's those which include group 1 and group 2 cations but is there a clear list for strong acids, too?

There are only 7 common strong acids:
HCl
HNO3
H2SO4
HBr
HI
HClO4
HClO3

Strong Bases tend to be composed of group 1 and 2 metals.

Some examples of strong bases using from group 1 and group 2 are CaO, Na2O, and Li2O.

Was that list in the textbook? For strong acids?

Is there a list to memorize for strong bases?

Yes, page 464 in the 7th edition textbook

Why would strong acids be conjugates of weak bases and vis versa? This concept escapes me.

Strong Acids: HCl, HBr, HI, HNO3, HClO3, HClO4, and H2SO4
Stong Bses: LiOh, NaOH, KOH, RbOH, CsOH, Ca(OH)2, Ba(OH02, and Sr(OH)2

A conjugate base is the molecule that is formed after an acid loses a proton.
An acid or base and its conjugate are inversely proportional in terms of strength. Therefore the stronger the acid the weaker its conjugate base.

So if we can memorize strong acids/bases, is it necessary to memorize common weak acids/bases? Or, like the original poster said, can we just assume that anything now on the list of strong acids/bases is a weak acid/base?
