A cation is a positive ion, so an atom that has lost one or more electrons thus becoming positively charged

An anion has a negative charge, and a cation has a positive charge.
To have a negative charge, there has to be more electrons than protons in the atom. Therefore, anions are atoms that have extra electron(s).
To have a positive charge, there has to be fewer electrons than protons in the atom, so cations are atoms that have lost electron(s).
An easy way to remember which one is positive is that cations are "paw"sitive (sorry, I hate it too, but it really does help me remember which one is which).
To have a negative charge, there has to be more electrons than protons in the atom. Therefore, anions are atoms that have extra electron(s).
