cis and trans

Postby alanaarchbold » Sat Dec 08, 2018 7:51 pm

Do we have to know what cis and trans is for naming? What is that if we do?

I don't think that we need to use it for naming (someone correct me if I am wrong). But cis basically means that the atoms of the same element are on the same side of the molecule, versus tris means their on the opposite sides if that makes sense.

not for naming but definitely for drawing out the structures

Not for naming, but it is important to know that a cis isomer has elements on the same sides of the molecule while a trans isomer has elements on the opposite sides of a molecule.
