Sig Figs on Midterm
My TA wasn't particularly strict on SigFigs on Tests #1 and #2. Will it be more of a factor for the midterm?

I think he will, it's always better to be safe than sorry, especially since we aren't taking our test in our discussion sections.

I think significant figures will be more important on this test. Pay attention to the question and use the least number of significant figures. One point will probably be docked for each significant figure mistake

I believe so. For the quantum test we took I believe it was 2 points for every sig fig error. I would definitely advise brushing up on the rules for sig figs and making sure you clearly mark how many are needed for the final answer. This way you can avoid any simple mistakes and get the most points possible.

As the other people said, I think sigfigs were important but it might depend on youre TA. I believe on the test it said to do sigfigs though.

I think it may be strict on the midterm. On the constants and formula page, it says 2 pts. for sig figs.

Re: Sig Figs on Midterm
I think it is always best to assume that sig figs will be important. Remember the basic rules that you must go off of the sig figs from the numbers provided in the problem. The one with the smallest amount is the one you use. Leading zeros are never significant, imbedded zeros are always significant, trailing zeros are significant only if the decimal point is specified. A good hint is to change the numbers to scientific notation to see better. Even if your TAs are not strict on the first few tests it is good practice to always be strict with sig figs. That way you can prevent any unnecessary points being lost.

to be safe, we should follow all sig fig rules. but just remember that the rules for pH and pOH are different. the sig figs for those count after the decimal.
