Cisplatin

Postby davidryan3f » Sun Dec 09, 2018 10:44 am

How does the fact that the ligands in cisplatin only bind at one site help account for the way that the drug stops cell division?

The cisplatin has the two chlorine atoms on the same side of the molecule, therefore, both chlorines are replaced by nitrogens in adjacent guanine base pairs. This stops the replication mechanisms from replicating the DNA because the cisplatin has stopped it.

In cisplatin the molecule is organized so that both binding sites are on the same side of the molecule so it can bind twice to the same strand of DNA stopping cell division.
